Thanks to all of the families for their support - we had the equivalent to 2 IKEA bags full (a ton of product!) of hygiene products to donate from the summer's collections.  Knowing that the shelters in the Houston area have a great need, we are sending our donations to that area.  With the assistance of Support the Girls-Austin, the products will go where they are most needed.  Keep spreading the word girls - the next drop off will be in November.

Girls Helping Girls, Period!!

Austin #5 and Ladybird Pledge decided to start a new program aimed at assisting girls and women at the shelters in our areas by donating feminine hygiene products.

A
tough part of being homeless and female, besides the more obvious struggles of staying safe and fed, is how to handle your period. We read about how desperate that time of the month can be for homeless women.

Shelters are perpetually short on the basics that get women through their periods. When donating toiletries, most people opt for staples like toothbrushes and toilet paper and don’t think to donate pads and tampons. The basic act of staying clean, a major key to feeling human while confronting the struggles of homelessness, requires a draining amount of resourcefulness for women Since menstruation is rarely talked about to begin with, these needs surrounding it go unnoticed. If you’d like to help ladies get through their periods with a little more dignity, consider aiding us in our collections.  Our next donation will be in February - thanks for your support.

The two baskets were delivered to the Hope Alliance and the staff was so excited - they were very interested to learn about Rainbow Girls and our service activities.

Each basket had enough food for dinner and extra sides to stretch out the leftovers.  I inquired about the need for the Christmas baskets and they were excited to know we would be helping.  Round Rock OES will also be contributing to baskets so we plan to have 3 baskets to donate on December 19th.  Thank you to all of the parents who helped the girls get the donations together - we made a difference in the lives of a few families.  I am proud of all of you girls and your decision to assist these families!

"Old Glory" and our Veterans

Mimi Cecil, Grand American Flag Bearer, joined Anson Jones #507, National Sojourners, in presenting a program honoring our American Flag and Veterans at Hill City Lodge #456's meeting on Tuesday, November 15.  A dinner was held before the meeting with friends and family who joined the officers in the Lodge room for the programs.  After presenting a tribute to the American Flag, Mimi spoke on reaching out to our Veteran's; getting to know them and showing our support to both the service personnel and their families with a small but simple act of kindness - taking a moment to listen.

Thank you to both Hill City Lodge for their invitation and support and to Anson Jones #507, National Sojourners, for their educational history of our flag.  I know everyone enjoyed the evening.

Tonight is the last meeting of our Fall term.  Thank you to Mimi for serving in the east again - we have been very busy sharing laughs along the way.  Who can forget the "movie quote' themed Introductions or the new march music, and that a Narwals are so difficult to find -  I am so proud of the girls.  Their ritual work is constantly improving as they mentor each other and in completing their goals this last year they have shown their love for Rainbow and a life of service.  I know that we will have another FABULOUS term with Madison leading the way.  The officers are already learning their work for the new term and I see new adventures on the horizon.  Join us at our Installation on February 6th at 3pm!

2015 Grand Assembly has come and gone!

It was a great year for Austin #5 during GWA Allison's term of "Paradise in Rainbow."  Mimi (Gr. Service), Sierra (Gr, Conf. Obs./Rep. to AZ/NM) and Taylor (Gr. Outer Obs.) did wonderful in their ritual work!!  Ivy and Madison served as Personal Pages to Sierra and Taylor.  Ivy and Samantha dressed up for the Cavalcade of Flags representing Arizona and New Mexico - great costumes!  Makayla lead us with a prayer at the Awards luncheon. Mimi, Taylor, Sierra, Madison and Ivy earned their A/B, Makayla earned her Obligation (first timer) and Samantha did all (even the questions) but a few sentences at the end of traditional - so close!

We had a few surprises at appointments and are excited for the upcoming year!  Mimi was elected Grand Hope, Sierra was appointed Grand Immortality, Mrs. Cecil was appointed to the Grand Committee, Mr, Hall is returning as a Grand COW and Mrs. Hall remains our Grand Deputy - we are so excited to begin our year "On the Road with Texas Rainbow" under our new GWA Emily from Waco #18.
